There are a few hints and tips we can give to you to help maintain your carpet and help cut down on those stains and chemical reactions that some off the shelf products will have if used incorrectly. Some carpet types such as wool will need specialist care.
- Mop up drinks spills straight away! Blot, do not rub. Rubbing will ruin the fibres and make them “fuzzy”
- After blotting as much spillage as you can, use a clean damp cloth (wringed out with warm water) to further blot the spill until all residue is removed Most stains can be prevented!
- Most of all do not follow carpet cleaning tips from anyone that is not a carpet cleaner! Some stains can be caused by a reaction from improper cleaning using ‘age old cleaning tricks’ and these can be near impossible to treat.
- If possible, rearrange your furniture so that the foot fall ins’t constantly falling in the same area. On some carpets this can distort the fibres and cause “pooling” where the carpet pile is laying against its self.
Spots and stains
The difference between spots and stains can be confusing to some people but the basic description is simple.
Assessing the spot or stain is an important part of the removal process. The PH level and carpet type determines the removal method and approach, a professional carpet cleaner will be able to do this and get the best possible result.
Improper treatment could result in damage and/or setting the stain or bleaching, making it impossible to remove.
Spot – on the surface of the fibre. e.g. Blu-tac, chewing gum
Stain – in the fibres. e.g. coffee, wine
